MHMMIC Board

The Company’s Board of Directors consists of 5 – 7 members, the majority of whom must be shareholders or designated agents of shareholders.  Directors are elected at the annual shareholders meeting and serve 2-year terms, which are staggered to ensure continuity on the board.  Each shareholder present (or by proxy) votes their number of shares for as many persons as there are directors to be elected.  Cumulative voting of shares of stock is authorized for the election of Directors, as set forth in the Articles of Incorporation.

Nomination Policy

Nominations for candidates for election to the Board of Directors must be submitted by a shareholder in writing before January 1st in order for their names to be included on the ballot sent with the notice of the annual shareholders meeting.  Submissions should be mailed to MH-MMIC, P.O. Alex Kim

I have lived in the Roaring Fork Valley for 32 years. I am the co-owner and chef of Fusion Design & Catering with my wife Laura. We purchased our 46 acre Missouri Heights property we call Dragonfly Ranch in 2001, and turned the weed infested, vacant land into 35 acres of high quality horse hay, most years being certified weed free. I have been the captain and ditch walker of the Fender ditch since 2001, and served on the board since 2019. After many years of improving our land, installing piping, a 780’ pivot and gun stations — we moved from our home in Woody Creek into our Fusion designed building in 2008, which houses our primary residence and licensed commercial catering kitchen. In 2018 during the Lake Christine fire, we learned just how valuable and important our water and irrigation system are, when at midnight on July 4th, as the fire raged onto our property and others, we were able to stop it within 20 feet of our front door and prevent several of our neighbors’ homes and barns from burning down. We need to protect our valuable water resource.

Gay Lewis, Treasurer

I moved to the Roaring Fork Valley in 1969. My education has always been in ranching and accounting.  My husband and I began ranching in Old Snowmass where we raised horses, cattle, and angora goats.  I was instrumental in establishing The Little Elk Creek Irrigation Company in Snowmass where I documented all the pertinent water rights into this entity. In 1999, my husband and I bought a ranch on Missouri Heights where we continued to raise cattle, horses, and pygmy goats. In 2000 I was elected Treasurer to the Missouri Heights Mountain Meadow Irrigation Company and have been there ever since.  Managing and protecting our water is one of my top priorities.

Julie Mikus

I have lived in the Roaring Fork Valley for over 40 years and have resided in Missouri Heights for 20 years.  I am currently the President of the Kings Row HOA and take care of the bookkeeping for the Missouri Heights Community League School.  Kings Row runs off of the middle ditch so for the last 6 years I have been actively involved with the irrigation system for Kings Row working with Gay Lewis, the middle ditch Captain.

Mike Spayd, Vice President

I moved to Missouri Heights in 2007 and quickly became involved in the Ditch Company work and eventually joined the board in 2012.  My passion has been in developing and understanding of the prioritization of water rights as well as the infrastructures that deliver this water.  As the demand on water resources continues to increase, I have been influential in MHMMIC projects that manage and improve water delivery systems.  My family and I operate a small farm on owned and leased land served by the Middle Ditch.

Scott Strang, President

I was born in the valley and grew up on the Strang Ranch in the 1960’s and 1970’s when Missouri Heights was a bit more rural than it is now.  After college I moved away from the Roaring Fork Valley and worked in many different fields (as a carpenter & woodworker, exhibit fabricator for a childrens museum, environmental educator & elementary school teacher) before returning to the valley in 2014 to help manage the ranch. Our MHMMIC water is delivered via the Highline lateral.  I have served on the MHMMIC board since 2015.

Andrea Traul, Secretary

I have served as the Secretary for the MHMMIC since 2008. My family and I own and operate a small cow calf operation on Missouri Heights as well as working for a private ranch holder in the Roaring Fork Valley operating all aspects of the ranch.  I have extensive knowledge of water operations and water rights in both ditches and reservoirs due to my time serving on the MHMMIC board, the Needham Ditch and the ranch which operates multiple water rights via ditches and reservoirs. My family remains involved in agricultural production and both of my children hope to stay involved in the Roaring Fork Valley. I have experience in corporate settings and boards as well, having worked as the General Manager for a major outerwear company for 12 years prior to owning and operating a Custom Home building company.  Many of the resources needed for the MHMMIC relate to construction as well as agriculture.  As Missouri Heights grows and new people join the community, I feel it is important to maintain agriculture in Missouri Heights and to continue to tap the knowledge and experience of long-established agricultural property owners.  There are changing landscapes of both property ownership and climate issues that will impact all water rights holders going forward and I am happy to continue to be involved in protecting this crucial resource in Missouri Heights through lending both my time and knowledge to the MHMMIC board and its shareholders.
